Recommended Climbing Season
Kamikochi offers different charms throughout the year and is worth visiting in every season. Here are the characteristics of each season:
■ Spring (Mid-April to June)
Spring arrives in mid-April, and with the melting snow, many plants and animals begin to become active. The fresh greenery thrives, and particularly in May, you’ll find beautiful flowers like skunk cabbage and anemone blooming. During this time, the area is relatively less crowded, making it perfect for quietly enjoying nature.
■ Summer (July to September)
Summer is the ideal season for mountain climbing and trekking. The daytime temperatures rise, allowing for comfortable trekking. The area is well-equipped with hot springs and accommodations, and stargazing is also recommended. The summer scenery of Kamikochi is breathtaking, offering stunning views of the impressive Hotaka Mountain Range—truly a paradise for hikers and nature lovers.
■ Autumn (October to Mid-November)
Autumn, the season of colorful leaves, is one of the most beautiful times of the year in Kamikochi. The larch trees turn golden, and the broadleaf trees display vibrant reds and yellows, creating a truly mesmerizing view. The weather is cool, making for comfortable trekking, though the shorter daylight hours require a planned itinerary.
■ Winter (Mid-November to Early April)
Kamikochi is closed during the winter season, but the tranquility and snowy landscapes still offer something unique and special for those who visit. Snowshoe trekking is popular due to the deep snow. Winter is particularly appealing to experienced outdoor enthusiasts.
Each season in Kamikochi has its own beauty, so choose the season to visit that aligns with your interests.

Safety and Risk Management
■Risks and precautionsCareful preparation and planning are essential to ensure safety when climbing snowy mountains. First, you should always check the weather information and refrain from climbing if bad weather is expected. In addition, proper equipment is the key to safety, and cold weather clothing, crampons, ice axes, and other equipment are essential. By accompanying an experienced climber or a guide, you can calmly respond to any trouble that may occur. In addition, submitting a climbing notification and informing family and friends of your climbing plans are also important safety measures.
■Emergency responseSnowy mountains have their own unique risks. For example, avalanches, poor visibility, and hypothermia due to low temperatures. Risk management requires sufficient knowledge and skill acquisition before climbing. Considering the weather and snow conditions and choosing a route according to your experience also helps reduce risk. In addition, it is important to avoid unreasonable itineraries and take sufficient rest while acting in order to maintain your physical strength and be able to respond to emergencies.
